This family received more than just photos and films

Linda & Mike’s Story
Guest post written by Linda F.

Photographers play the role of family historians. They dutifully and often beautifully document the births and growth of children, the changing dynamics of a family, the holidays, the important events. These memories are collected, edited, printed, and handed back as pieces of paper filled with the smiling faces of those who are someone’s entire world.

But-Melody is not a historian nor is she a photographer. She is elevated into the same category as the true magicians and miracle workers, those rare few who have incredible gifts and are willing to share them with the world.

In my maternity pictures, my son’s first birthday, and my daughter’s birth, Melody did not just take our pictures, which anyone with a camera can do, but she somehow managed to capture the essence of our family. When we look her photos we don’t see our faces so much as we see the overwhelming love and joy we find in each other. We see the excitement as we navigate parenthood. We see the pride in our son’s face as he holds his sister. Melody doesn’t take pictures. She encapsulates the feeling of the moment, and gives it back to us as a gift of immeasurable value.

There is this undefinable something when you meet the person you are going to spend the rest of your life with- the world shifts, starts spinning a little smoother maybe. And when you and that person are lucky enough to have first one healthy, amazing, little child, and luckier still to have a second fiery, fierce little person, you recognize that blessing and thank your lucky stars for it every day. I may not be able to ever define the depth of the love I have for my family, but I don’t need to. Melody captures it for me.

“The world is full of magic things, waiting for our senses to grow sharper.”
-W.B. Yeats

Take a glimpse into their story…

Preserving memories before the big move

Laura & Mark’s Story

This is their first home, both as a couple and as a new family. In a few months they will be moving to a forever home. Although their daughter won’t remember this house, as she grows she will be able to see the love that was ever-present here through the memories we captured here. From the floors that they spent days refinishing with their own hands to the decor they lovingly made for their daughter’s nursery, the walls that surround them are just as important in their story as their laughter and snuggles.

What stayed with me most after filming this family was the way in which they so comfortably and casually hung out together like I wasn’t even there. The joy of just being together made this environment so calming that at the end of the session mom and baby fell asleep together on the couch. While searching for a song for them, I knew I needed something that would articulate how this home and their time together as a young family was filled with so much happiness.

“Happy is a heart that’s full now. Happy is a heart that sings out loud. Happy is a heart that feels right. Happy is a heart that’s so light.”

Lyrics from “”Happy Is The Heart” by Steve Collom

A homestead is more than just land

The Feltons’ Story

The Felton homestead is 80 acres of pure beauty and memories. This is where I grew up. For his entire life, my dad has lived on this land that his father and grandfather once called home. As a kid some of my fondest memories were spent here. Walking down the driveway with my brother to visit my Meme and Pepe, digging for worms using a tin bandaid can to hold them so we could catch brookies for breakfast, camping in the fields with friends, and lots of campfires. Watching my children playing in these fields brings with it a flood of wonderful memories.

Since quarantine began, I’ve spent more time exploring this property than ever before. When the weather is nice and we’re feeling pent-up our family goes for a hike up the trails, sometimes taking a nap in hammocks over one of the small waterfalls.

I made this film for my dad last fall. When I showed it to him without the narration his only response was, “Wow, do I really look that old?” I fully intended to finish the film with narration but I can’t deny my bubble was popped and I let it sit there unfinished for months. It wasn’t quarantine and spending so much time here that I really truly appreciated what this land means to our family. Without knowing it, I needed to wait until now to write the narration because this time has completely shifted my perspective of what the homestead means to me and our family.

In 2013 my brother passed away in a car accident. For a long time I felt guilty that this land will one day become mine. It should have been my brothers’. It was meant to be passed down through the Felton lineage, and although I’m a Felton by blood I no longer bear their last name. Spending time here shifted my perspective, which is reflected in the narration I wrote as a letter to my dad. This time when he watched his film, he was a puddle of tears.

“I remember the days when I was little running through these fields. Now my children are here with you. This earth that once grew food for my great grandparents now fills my children with love and joy. To them the harvest is about the excitement of picking pumpkins and corn. To me, this time is a reminder of how we are all rooted to the stories of those who came before us. You fill our children with love in every tender moment, with your patience and gentle touch, with your smile that gives comfort and peace, and with the touch of your loving hands. These are the most precious gifts that my children will ever receive. There is nothing else like the love of a grandparent. The stories they remember of this homestead will forever be filled with you. When they look back they will taste the sweetness of the corn grown with your hands. They will follow in your footsteps, learning how to love people, animals, and the earth. The Felton name will never be lost. It continues within each of us, in the land, and in the beauty that will surround generations to come.”

When you think your family's theme song is circus music...

Whitney’s Story

When Whitney first reached out to me about a film she sort of chuckled at the idea of trying to do a session in her full house. She asked me, “Can you do a film with circus music?” We came up with a plan to spotlight each of her kids and then come together as a family for hot chocolate. I know what you’re thinking…kids and hot chocolate = wardrobe disaster. Yep, there were spills because that’s real life. The focus isn’t on the stains it’s on the joy the children felt preparing for Christmas as a family.

Each of the kids chose their own activity. It captured memories of their interests at the time and made it much easier for them to be relaxed in front of the camera. All they had to do was be themselves.

When I came across this song I new it was the most perfect fit for them (and it isn’t circus music):

“I’m gonna love you for the rest of my life. I’ll never let you go. Give me your hand and we’ll hold on tight through whatever comes and goes.”

Lyrics from “Our Love Comes easy by Jessie Villa

There is a reason they are called "great" grandparents

Song credit: “Best of All Our Days” by Andrew Simple

David’s Story
Generational sessions are so powerful. There is so much beauty in the varied relationships between little ones and their parents, grandparents, and even great grandparents. Each one holds such a unique bond and energy that is not had anywhere else. Lately in Family Stories sessions I have been really encouraging the inclusion of extended family in sessions and my husband, David, mentioned something one day about how much it hurts him to watch these generations together when his own is incomplete. His mom passed away in 2013. Not a day goes by that the emptiness from her absence is not noticed. He wanted a generational session but he wanted her to be part of it.

When we talked about going to his grandparents’ house to capture their story, we wanted to capture two important perspectives: what Grampa’s normal day-to-day routine was like (he loves his coffee cake muffins with “reduced” sugar) and how David appreciated them for the impact they have had on the lives around them. There was one more piece I knew I had to fit in: his mom needed to be part of it somehow.

Our daughter was getting crabby at nap time so he bounced her around in the living room until she dozed off in her favorite place to be – in Daddy’s arms. He got comfy on the couch, and if you’ve ever had a sleeping baby on you know that is nearly impossible to stay awake. As their breathing slowed and they melted into each other, I looked above the couch they were resting on and saw the pictures of family members surrounding them on the walls. In the same room, Grammi had a shelf to commemorate David’s mom. And as he laid there embracing his precious baby girl, I saw the tattoo of his mom’s face looking up at him in pride the same exact way she did on our wedding day. I felt all of that love and interconnectedness of loved ones embracing them in that moment.

You may be wondering what all this has to do with the title of the blog. I want to start with a short story. When we announced our first pregnancy, we gave a gift to Grammi at Christmas that was a picture of a bear with the caption “Beary Special Great Grandmother.” She smiled and said thank you and was about to move on without even realizing what it said. Looking back, she said she just thought it was saying she is a phenomenal grandmother. That stuck with me, both as a wonderful memory that makes me smile and a much deeper insight into what it is to be a great grandparent. I cannot do justice to the story that David tells in his own words through this story so I will take a piece from his narration:

“You continue to teach us all so much in the way you look with love at the lives you helped create. Through the love, through the loss, your simple and graceful ways carry the memories of this family. Time passes and pictures fade but your love endures forever.”

My "village" isn't what I expected

I’ve heard, “It takes a village to raise children.” I thought I didn’t have one.

Raising three children has been one heck of a struggle so far. When postpartum depression rears its ugly head, it feels impossible to crawl out of it. When I do, the constant stress from noise and being needed 24/7 can be exhausting and defeating.

I have a very supportive mother who does everything in her power to help me. My dad comes over when I need help. My husband loves me to an extent I never imagined was possible until I met him. I have loving support from my family, yet I still felt a deep loneliness on this journey of motherhood without the “village” that I perceived to be lost in our disconnected, social media culture. You know what I’m talking about. The parents who have family coming over constantly to help raise their children. Neighbors who stop by just to see how you are doing. Someone to call on who will come help at the drop of a dime. In complete honesty, I was sitting here brooding in pitty, feeling utterly sorry for myself that I don’t have a village. Then it hit me…

What was I talking about?! I DO have a village.

It came to me in a way I was not expecting. It happened slowly, so gradually that I didn’t even notice it was right in front of me. It’s not a village like I expected from the days gone by. Many of the people in my “village” have families of their own that keep them busy. Some of them live far away. There are even people who I don’t know very well but when I met them I felt an instant connection that told me this is someone I need to spend time getting to know. So I can’t have a block party with these people but man, is there a lot of love and support around me.

Now that I’ve realized this treasure that has been in front of me all along, I need to work on not feeling guilty asking for help, in person or through conversation. Each one of you is helping me in big and small ways to get through each day and be the best mother I can be.

Thank you for the meals you brought to me when I was recovering from childbirth. Thank you for the card you sent on my birthday. Thank you for inviting me for a playdate or for chatting with me at a gathering.

Thank you for surrounding me with love.

That first haircut makes a momma's heart ache

Caleb’s Story

I didn’t want to trim off his precious baby curls for fear that they might never grow back, but it was getting to the point that his hair was in knots every day and I had to give in. I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. This was shortly after taking my first course in filmmaking. I put my camera between me and my baby to keep the tears at bay, giving me a job to focus on (at least until after we were done). This was filmed while I was still pregnant with our youngest. In typical middle-child-fashion I didn’t get around to finishing the film for him. Recently we have been struggling with communicating with him. He gets so frustrated when we can’t understand him. There are times it seems he is expected to grow up faster than he should because his baby sister needs so much from me. One night I sat in the stillness of the house after the kids went to sleep and paused. This was important to finish – for him, for me, for our family. A reminder that life goes by too quickly to put memories on the back-burner. All it took was a few hours to finish, and now we have this treasure for a lifetime.

“This hair that once grew while you were nestled in my belly feels like the last piece of me that is connected to you. With every curl that falls to the floor, I’m reminded how quickly you’ve grown into an independent little human.”

Is Mrs. Claus Santa's Better Half?

Santa’s Origin Story

After spending time with them, it is apparent that both Mr. and Mrs. Claus are beautiful humans who bring both magic and love everywhere they go. Santa told me that he put on the red suit for the first time at work. One day a young girl came in with her 90-year-old grandmother. She excitedly asked to take a picture with Santa. When asked what she would like for Christmas, the frail grandma said, “I want another year of health to be with my family.” In becoming Santa for the day, he was able to give this family the gift of joy and a picture to capture a beautiful memory with Grandma. It was the moment he realized that he wanted to continue doing this for years to come. He asked his significant other to join him so they could use this as memorable time together going into retirement.

Don’t forget the Mrs.

When I first talked with Santa, he came to me with the idea of portraying Mrs. Claus as his “better half.” I must admit, I was totally clueless about what that meant. I was thinking, “Oh yeah, she does all the stuff in the background that no one sees like cook food and shovel reindeer poo.” Way to gender stereotype, Melody. Then Santa corrected me, “No, she’s not my better half because she does things for me. It is the sparkle in her eye, the love she pours into the world through her smile, and the gentleness of her being that bring light to my life.”

Take a glimpse into their story…

Moms with littles and moms with teenagers are not so different

Our first babysitter

This beautiful young woman is a blessing to our family. I had never left my children with anyone besides family until she came along. When I reached out for the first time on Facebook to find a sitter, she was the only person who emailed me like I asked. I knew that was a good sign right off the bat. She immediately puts her phone face down every time she enters our house, and the boys always look forward to playing with her. She gives me independence to leave the house for work and the preservation of my sanity. This adjustment to three children has been intense. I am so grateful for all she does to help me feel a little less overwhelmed.

Always her baby

There aren’t words powerful enough to thank her for what she brings to our family, so I asked her and her mom if they would like senior portraits. The three of us got in the car and drove around town, hopping out every time I spotted beautiful light and settings. Towards the end of the session I asked her mom to join in on a few pictures. I sensed her discomfort but I wasn’t immediately sure why, until the tears came rushing in. This is her baby girl.

Seeing across time

As I hold my six month old daughter in my arms I am reminded how gradually but oh-so-quickly time passes and our children change. As I grow older I can look backward and forward in time, something that I couldn’t do before children. I see the first time mom and reminisce about the excitement of starting a brand new journey in life. I see this mom with her daughter, not far from letting her go into the world on her own, and I can imagine all of the same feelings flooding in when my own daughter graduates high school. In between all the messes and diapers, crying and tantrums, I snuggle my little ones a little closer knowing that all-too-soon this stage of life will move into another one.
