A remembrance photo for my angel baby

My Angel | Melody Joy

The profile picture I use on my social accounts is a cropped version of a picture that holds so much meaning for me.

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep is an organization that provides remembrance photography for families who never get to bring their baby home from the hospital. When I first heard about NILMDTS I knew it was something I had to do. Although I had not experienced a pregnancy loss myself at the time, my photography was a place of healing for me after the loss of my mother-in-law and brother so I wanted to provide that gift to others as well. Emotionally, I could only really handle doing about one every month. While I was in a session I knew I had a job to do so I could hold it together pretty well but when I sat down to edit and relive those moments I was a mess.

About a year into volunteering for NILMDTS, my husband and I were trying to conceive our second child. After seeing so much loss, I was terrified that the same would happen to me. When I was about 8 weeks pregnant, my fears became reality and we lost the baby. I was in complete conflict. At the same time that I was grieving the loss of a child I had never seen or even heard the heartbeat of, I felt like I didn’t have the right to be upset when I had witnessed so many moms lose a baby full-term. Then, when my husband’s work told him to stay home with me for a few days and sent us a bouquet of flowers, I felt like I was given permission to feel everything that I needed to about the loss of this child. My husband helped me create a tangible memory of him or her with a photograph. I plucked a rose out of the bouquet. One side of the photo is to represent the short time I had to soak up the beauty of that precious life growing in my belly, and the reflection was of the intense and very real pain that I let out as I crushed the petals and let them fall to the floor, just as my heart felt shattered into pieces. This picture reminds me that my angel baby will always hold a place in my heart.

I want to give to others what I want most for myself – to relive the most important moments of life. Films are the closest we can come to going back in time.

Preserving memories before the big move

Laura & Mark’s Story

This is their first home, both as a couple and as a new family. In a few months they will be moving to a forever home. Although their daughter won’t remember this house, as she grows she will be able to see the love that was ever-present here through the memories we captured here. From the floors that they spent days refinishing with their own hands to the decor they lovingly made for their daughter’s nursery, the walls that surround them are just as important in their story as their laughter and snuggles.

What stayed with me most after filming this family was the way in which they so comfortably and casually hung out together like I wasn’t even there. The joy of just being together made this environment so calming that at the end of the session mom and baby fell asleep together on the couch. While searching for a song for them, I knew I needed something that would articulate how this home and their time together as a young family was filled with so much happiness.

“Happy is a heart that’s full now. Happy is a heart that sings out loud. Happy is a heart that feels right. Happy is a heart that’s so light.”

Lyrics from “”Happy Is The Heart” by Steve Collom

A homestead is more than just land

The Feltons’ Story

The Felton homestead is 80 acres of pure beauty and memories. This is where I grew up. For his entire life, my dad has lived on this land that his father and grandfather once called home. As a kid some of my fondest memories were spent here. Walking down the driveway with my brother to visit my Meme and Pepe, digging for worms using a tin bandaid can to hold them so we could catch brookies for breakfast, camping in the fields with friends, and lots of campfires. Watching my children playing in these fields brings with it a flood of wonderful memories.

Since quarantine began, I’ve spent more time exploring this property than ever before. When the weather is nice and we’re feeling pent-up our family goes for a hike up the trails, sometimes taking a nap in hammocks over one of the small waterfalls.

I made this film for my dad last fall. When I showed it to him without the narration his only response was, “Wow, do I really look that old?” I fully intended to finish the film with narration but I can’t deny my bubble was popped and I let it sit there unfinished for months. It wasn’t quarantine and spending so much time here that I really truly appreciated what this land means to our family. Without knowing it, I needed to wait until now to write the narration because this time has completely shifted my perspective of what the homestead means to me and our family.

In 2013 my brother passed away in a car accident. For a long time I felt guilty that this land will one day become mine. It should have been my brothers’. It was meant to be passed down through the Felton lineage, and although I’m a Felton by blood I no longer bear their last name. Spending time here shifted my perspective, which is reflected in the narration I wrote as a letter to my dad. This time when he watched his film, he was a puddle of tears.

“I remember the days when I was little running through these fields. Now my children are here with you. This earth that once grew food for my great grandparents now fills my children with love and joy. To them the harvest is about the excitement of picking pumpkins and corn. To me, this time is a reminder of how we are all rooted to the stories of those who came before us. You fill our children with love in every tender moment, with your patience and gentle touch, with your smile that gives comfort and peace, and with the touch of your loving hands. These are the most precious gifts that my children will ever receive. There is nothing else like the love of a grandparent. The stories they remember of this homestead will forever be filled with you. When they look back they will taste the sweetness of the corn grown with your hands. They will follow in your footsteps, learning how to love people, animals, and the earth. The Felton name will never be lost. It continues within each of us, in the land, and in the beauty that will surround generations to come.”

My "village" isn't what I expected

I’ve heard, “It takes a village to raise children.” I thought I didn’t have one.

Raising three children has been one heck of a struggle so far. When postpartum depression rears its ugly head, it feels impossible to crawl out of it. When I do, the constant stress from noise and being needed 24/7 can be exhausting and defeating.

I have a very supportive mother who does everything in her power to help me. My dad comes over when I need help. My husband loves me to an extent I never imagined was possible until I met him. I have loving support from my family, yet I still felt a deep loneliness on this journey of motherhood without the “village” that I perceived to be lost in our disconnected, social media culture. You know what I’m talking about. The parents who have family coming over constantly to help raise their children. Neighbors who stop by just to see how you are doing. Someone to call on who will come help at the drop of a dime. In complete honesty, I was sitting here brooding in pitty, feeling utterly sorry for myself that I don’t have a village. Then it hit me…

What was I talking about?! I DO have a village.

It came to me in a way I was not expecting. It happened slowly, so gradually that I didn’t even notice it was right in front of me. It’s not a village like I expected from the days gone by. Many of the people in my “village” have families of their own that keep them busy. Some of them live far away. There are even people who I don’t know very well but when I met them I felt an instant connection that told me this is someone I need to spend time getting to know. So I can’t have a block party with these people but man, is there a lot of love and support around me.

Now that I’ve realized this treasure that has been in front of me all along, I need to work on not feeling guilty asking for help, in person or through conversation. Each one of you is helping me in big and small ways to get through each day and be the best mother I can be.

Thank you for the meals you brought to me when I was recovering from childbirth. Thank you for the card you sent on my birthday. Thank you for inviting me for a playdate or for chatting with me at a gathering.

Thank you for surrounding me with love.

Is Mrs. Claus Santa's Better Half?

Santa’s Origin Story

After spending time with them, it is apparent that both Mr. and Mrs. Claus are beautiful humans who bring both magic and love everywhere they go. Santa told me that he put on the red suit for the first time at work. One day a young girl came in with her 90-year-old grandmother. She excitedly asked to take a picture with Santa. When asked what she would like for Christmas, the frail grandma said, “I want another year of health to be with my family.” In becoming Santa for the day, he was able to give this family the gift of joy and a picture to capture a beautiful memory with Grandma. It was the moment he realized that he wanted to continue doing this for years to come. He asked his significant other to join him so they could use this as memorable time together going into retirement.

Don’t forget the Mrs.

When I first talked with Santa, he came to me with the idea of portraying Mrs. Claus as his “better half.” I must admit, I was totally clueless about what that meant. I was thinking, “Oh yeah, she does all the stuff in the background that no one sees like cook food and shovel reindeer poo.” Way to gender stereotype, Melody. Then Santa corrected me, “No, she’s not my better half because she does things for me. It is the sparkle in her eye, the love she pours into the world through her smile, and the gentleness of her being that bring light to my life.”

Moms with littles and moms with teenagers are not so different

Our first babysitter

This beautiful young woman is a blessing to our family. I had never left my children with anyone besides family until she came along. When I reached out for the first time on Facebook to find a sitter, she was the only person who emailed me like I asked. I knew that was a good sign right off the bat. She immediately puts her phone face down every time she enters our house, and the boys always look forward to playing with her. She gives me independence to leave the house for work and the preservation of my sanity. This adjustment to three children has been intense. I am so grateful for all she does to help me feel a little less overwhelmed.

Always her baby

There aren’t words powerful enough to thank her for what she brings to our family, so I asked her and her mom if they would like senior portraits. The three of us got in the car and drove around town, hopping out every time I spotted beautiful light and settings. Towards the end of the session I asked her mom to join in on a few pictures. I sensed her discomfort but I wasn’t immediately sure why, until the tears came rushing in. This is her baby girl.

Seeing across time

As I hold my six month old daughter in my arms I am reminded how gradually but oh-so-quickly time passes and our children change. As I grow older I can look backward and forward in time, something that I couldn’t do before children. I see the first time mom and reminisce about the excitement of starting a brand new journey in life. I see this mom with her daughter, not far from letting her go into the world on her own, and I can imagine all of the same feelings flooding in when my own daughter graduates high school. In between all the messes and diapers, crying and tantrums, I snuggle my little ones a little closer knowing that all-too-soon this stage of life will move into another one.

Kindergarten homework through Mom's eyes

Homework – just another thing to do

My son is in kindergarten this year. It’s my first time doing homework from a parent’s perspective. It’s not a lot of work. It’s not hard to do. Carter loves doing it. Yet I find myself getting stressed every week at the last minute because we didn’t get it done. Mind you, I was a high achiever in school and I HATED procrastinating. There is so much to manage as a mother. It’s hard for me to juggle it all and I kept seeing homework as one more thing I had to keep track of. Last night, that changed.

From a task to time together

Last week my son came home full of excitement. He was chosen as the class VIP for the week! He had a bag full of construction paper, glue, markers and instructions to create a collection of his favorite things to be displayed on a board in the classroom. We kept talking about getting it done, but it wasn’t until the morning it was due that we tried to throw things together. The printer wasn’t working and we ran out of time. I felt like I had failed him, deflating his excitement over something that was important to him and I didn’t prioritize it. After that moment, I made a commitment to make this fun for him. It would be a day late but we would have fun creating it. Last night we went though our pictures to find his favorite things, went to CVS to print them, cut, glued, and wrote out captions.

Not just another late assignment

When I saw this completed project it hit me. I am always encouraging clients to share their stories. This is Carter’s! These are the things that mean the most to him – friends, family, dinosaurs, watching his brother and sister come into this world. I find just as much joy in flipping through this simple homework assignment than big, beautiful albums. I can’t promise I will always do homework on time from here on out, but I can take a moment to look through this kindergartener’s eyes and see that the simple joys are in the love that surrounds us every day.

Carter’s Story

To the mom hiding from the camera - I see you

Mary Ann’s Story

There is something magical in watching children explore. Sure, we can go outside and see the same ladybugs, bees, and flowers as our kids but our eyes do not see the same things they do. They see so much wonder in the beauty of life that we all too often find commonplace. I have always admired how these girls love to find the details in nature that my eyes graze over. Skinned knees, wet dresses, and chipped finger nail polish perfectly portray their free spirits. And behind all of the moments that these girls have me captivated by the carefree exploration that should be part of every childhood, I see a mom in the background who is doing it right.

Yes, I see you. Mom of two gorgeous little humans. The one laden with bags and jackets. You are there in every adventure. You change clothes and clean up messes. You are always there and yet your children take the stage. Even though you constantly feel guilty about not spending enough time out in the dirt with them, and you are uncomfortable getting in front of the camera, your girls will forever and always know you were there. YOU are a part of your children. You are Mom and you are loved.

“You are the best part of me. The side I hope everyone sees. The air that I breath, my missing piece, wasn’t complete before you ’cause you are the best part of me.”

Lyrics from “Best Part of Me” by Landon Austin

An angel baby doesn't replace the child I lost

Laura’s Story

When I lost Anastasia, my world went dark. It was as if my entire life’s purpose was stolen from me without warning. I didn’t think I would ever or could ever be happy again. Then, just over a year later, I got pregnant with Blake. It felt like everyone thought that Blake would “cure” my sadness and in so many ways, he does. He brought joy back to my life, purpose back to my days and a smile back to my face. But he did not replace Anastasia. My heart still aches for her and my arms long to hold her. I want to shout to the world, “I am the Mother of TWO precious, perfect and beautiful children!”

Ambigram commissioned by John Langdon

Take a glimpse into their story…

Capturing eternal light

The pictures Melody took for us show just that, my TWO babies. One in my arms and one forever in my heart. They show not just the physical representation of Anastasia in her blanket, her bear, her photo. They show her light. I am eternally grateful for these beautiful photographs that capture the love that I will always have for BOTH of my children, even where the world sees only one. These are the perfect reminder that Anastasia existed and that my life and the life of her baby brother will forever be changed by her tiny footprint on Earth.
